Liverpool Conservatives
Welcome to Merseyside Conservative Ladies' Lunch Club

In 1957 Mrs Guinevere Tilney, the wife of the MP for Liverpool Wavertree and Mrs Nancy Papworth decided to form a Ladies Lunch Club to give the ladies of Merseyside an opportunity to hear the views of a wide range of Conservative MPs. With the help and support of Sir Ernest Stacey, the chairman or the Liverpool Conservative Association, the Lunch club was founded and the first lunch was held on November 8th 1957 at the New Shakespare Theatre Club. The speaker was Miss Joan Vickers MP. About 50 members were present. The membership grew rapidly and soon exceeded 250. Only three of the original founder members are still members today.

The first Christmas Lunch was held on December 6th 1957 at the Stork Hotel in Williamson Square. Details of the speaker on this occasion are missing. On December 12th 1958 the Christmas Lunch Was held at the Exchange Hotel and the speaker on that occasion was Mr Jonn Eden MP. The Christmas Lunches were held in the Exchange Hotel for many years until the Hotel closed.

From 1958 the club settled on a permanent home and met regularly at Reeces Restaurant in Clayton Square in a private room on the top floor. When Recces closed the club met in a number or different Hotels but eventually settled at the Adelphi. In 1957 Liverpool and much of Merseyside was Conservative control Led but despite the political changes of the past years the Club has survived and flourished. Our two founders would have been proud to know that we are now celebrating 50 years.
